WFS Scottish Cup 2022

On Saturday the over 50s returned to Glasgow Green to defend the Scottish Cup that they have held for the last three years. Three years ago they came to Glasgow Green for the day out, not expecting to win anything but hoping for a good day out and a good showing. After a slow start and some adjustment they made it out of their group and into the quarter finals. And the rest, as they say, is history. So three years later could they repeat the deed?

This year there were 17 teams in the over 50s competition split into two groups of six and one group of five. Raith found themselves in a group of six with teams from Drumchapel Utd, Hearts, Pollock Utd (B), Rossvale and Scone WFC. The top two in each group along with the two best third places going forward to make the last eight in the quarter finals.

Back row: Steve Fleming, John Cunningham, Dave Fawcett, Scott Jackson, Willie Carroll, George Lindsay
Front row: Charles Doherty, Derek Finnie, Pete Munn, John Wylie

The first game in the groups saw Drumchapel Utd play Hearts who were runners up three years ago. The game ended with a 4-0 victory for Hearts. Next up was Pollock Utd (B) against Scone WFC. This game ended in a 1-1 draw despite Pollock being awarded a penalty in the last minutes. Scone goalie, Gary, guessed correctly and “fell” (his description) in the right direction and saved a valuable point for his team.

And so to our first game. We played Rossvale a team we previously played in the group stages of the Glasgow Life cup when both teams had effectively been eliminated. A tight game with both teams pressing and some excellent defending and goal keeping with luck not going for either team. In 9 minutes a Scott Jackson shot beat the keeper but crashed off the post and out. Two minutes later a John Cunningham shot hit the other post and stayed out. In the final minute a brilliant Scott Jackson shot was expertly saved by the keeper and the game finished 0-0.

The next game saw Drumchapel Utd play Scone. Scone ran out comfortable 3-1 winners with the Scone goalie once again “falling” the correct way and saving a penalty.

Our next game saw us play Hearts the team we beat on penalties after a 0-0 draw in the final three years ago. With Raith having five players returning from that game and Hearts having more than a few familiar faces this was always going to be a tight game. And so it proved. A rare on target shot from Willie Carroll in the seventh minute and a Steve Fleming dig in fourteen minutes were the only incidents of note apart from a wee bit of niggle between John Wylie and a Hearts defender. And so the game ended 0-0.

Next game up was Rossvale against Pollock Utd (B). Another tight game which Rossvale finally ran out 2-1 winners.

With only two points from the first two games and no goals, a quick start and a few goals were needed in our next game which was against Drumchapel Utd. And that’s exactly what happened. John Wylie took the centre and passed a short ball back to Scott Jackson. Scott struck a vicious shot goal ward which deflected off a Drumchapel player and flew past the keeper for a perfect start to the game. A minute later Scott returned the favour to John, intercepting a defensive pass and slipping the ball to John who finished well to put Raith two nil up. In six minutes a through ball found Steve Fleming in front of goal and he finished with aplomb. In eight minutes John Wylie hit the score sheet again making the keeper move first before chipping the ball over his prostrate body for four nil. Raith ended the scoring in ten minutes when John Cunningham intercepted a pass across the back and beat the keeper for five nil and keeper Pete Munn’s third clean sheet of the day.

We then had two games before the lunch break which Raith weren’t involved in which saw Rossvale beat Scone 3-2 (Gary failed to save the penalty in this one) and Hearts beating Pollock Utd (B) 4-1.

The first game after lunch saw Rossvale beat Drumchapel Utd 3-0 to take the lead in the group.

The next game for Raith was against Pollock (B) with Raith needing a win to keep up the challenge for the quarters. And what an explosive game this was. Raith kicked off trying the same tactic that worked at the start of the last game but this time to no avail. However a quick goal by Willie Carroll from a corner in two minutes started the “ball” rolling. A minute later a through ball found John Wylie and he beat the keeper for a “comfortable” two nil lead. The lead however didn’t last for long with a goal for Pollock a minute later and then a lost ball in midfield leading to another goal, tying the game. However Scott Jackson intercepted a pass in seven minutes and shot past the keeper to make it three two. In ten minutes a passing move between Steve and Scott allowed Scott to shoot past the keeper again for four two. Then in eleven minutes Scott closed out the game and earned his hat trick when he collected a pass from John Wylie and scored to make it five two.

There then was a three game wait until our last game with Hearts beating Scone WFC 5-0, Pollock Utd (B) beating Drumchapel Utd 3-2 and Hearts beating Rossvale 2-1 in between.

Going into our last game, and the group last game, we knew we were in third and a win against Scone WFC would see us comfortably into second in the group and through to the quarters. But in true Raith fashion things didn’t go as planned. Raith found it hard to break down a stubborn Scone defence and a third running offence by Raith in the eleventh minute meant it was a penalty to Scone which they duly scored. Three minutes later and a third running offence by Scone saw Scott level the scores from the resultant penalty. With the game looking like a it was closing to a draw a Scone player took a speculative shot from far and wide on the left beating Pete in the home goal for our first defeat of the day.

Having secured third place in the group we had an anxious wait while the numbers guys worked out the numbers before it was confirmed that we had made it through to the quarter final draw. The draw was made and the third game to be drawn had Raith playing Pollock United (A).

The quarter final started badly for Raith with a second minute goal for Pollock. Pollock passed the ball well through midfield to their front man who turned and shot low into Pete’s right hand corner for a one nil lead. The game continued end to end with both teams passing well and having chances. Pollock hitting the post in the ninth minute and a short backpass in the tenth minute bringing off a point blank save from Pete. A nice passing move from Raith in the next minute and Scott with only the keeper to beat put the ball inches wide. With time running out and Raith pressing for an equalising goal another slick passing move sees the Pollock front man turn again and slot the ball into Pete’s bottom right hand corner. With Raith still pushing in the fourteenth minute a ball to the left finds a Pollock man on his own and he slots the ball across the face of the goal, into the net and the tie is over.

And so our cup adventure was over. A good display considering the squad issues but everyone, on the day, played their part and played them well. It just wasn’t to be.

Special mention though has to go to John Wylie for playing through the pain and Scott Jackson for his five goals. However Man of the Tournament for Raith has to go to Pete Munn for his great performance in goal. Three clean sheets in the group stages, two against the teams that topped the group, in his first big tournament was immense. Well done Pete.

WFS East League 2022 Month 4

The over 50s made the trip up to Dundee on Sunday to a re-arranged fixture list. Due to injuries and availability issues two teams had to withdraw from this weekend so their games were awarded as 3-0 victories to their opponents. And, to give each team an equal number of games, some friendlies were organised. Our first game in the new fixtures wasn’t until round two however due to another team’s transit problems (ie. their bus was late) round two was played first.

Back: George Lindsay, Dave Fawcett, Steve Fleming, Willie Carroll, John Cunningham, Ian McMillan
Front: Charles Doherty, Kevin Henderson, Pete Munn, John Wylie

So first up was our friends from along the road Dunfermline Dynamos.
The game started with Raith on top. Lots of lovely passing from the Raith boys but with nothing goal-wise to show for it except for a Kevin Henderson attempt after six minutes. An encroachment into the penalty area by a Dunfermline player in the seventh minute led to the award of a penalty which John Wylie expertly put past the keeper. Two minutes later and three running infractions by Dunfermline led to another penalty award. John Wylie, self acknowledged penalty supremo, stepped up to take and fired it down the middle. The keeper dived right but threw out a leg and saved it. In eleven minutes Dunfermline break through the Raith defence. Their player was one on one with the keeper but only managed to bring out a great save from Pete Munn. The team regrouped and a lovely passing move ended with Ian McMillan giving the keeper the eyes and calmly lifting the ball over him and into the net. With just two minutes left in the game John Cunningham chased a ball into the corner. The covering Dunfermline defender ran to beat him to the ball and the referee awarded a free kick. Some quick passing in the corner and the ball ended up at John Cunningham’s feet a foot out from the bye line and he scored from a seemingly impossible angle. Dunfermline Dynamos 0-3 Raith.
Fife Wanderers 2-0 Montrose
Carnoustie Panmure 0-1 Tayport
Dunfermline 0-3 Raith Rovers
Arbroath 0-2 St James

And so we sit out Game two.
Crieff Juniors 4-2 Fife Wanderers
Dundee Utd CT 1-1 Montrose
Carnoustie Panmure 2-1 Saints in the Community

In game three we played Dundee Utd. As always a tight game with a very vociferous Dundee Utd. Both teams pushing back and forward with nothing of note happening until John Wylie goes off injured in the seventh minute. In the ninth minute Pete Munn pulls off a great save but is helpless a minute later when Dundee Utd are awarded a penalty for a foul inside the “penalty area”. From this point on it’s all Raith pressure and a Kevin Henderson shot in the fourteenth minute brings a great save from the keeper but that’s it. Dundee Utd 1-0 Raith
Dundee Utd CT 1-0 Raith
Carnoustie Panmure 1-1 St James
Arbroath 2-1 Tayport
Dunfermline Dynamos 3-3 Saints in the Community

There was one more competitive game to be played between Crieff Juniors and St James which ended in a 2-2 draw.

The team played two further friendly games against Tayport and Crieff Juniors where all squad members participated. Scores were not recorded but the game against Crieff was memorable for George Lindsay’s first goal for the team and a rare Willie Carroll strike that actually ended up on target.
Oh and Steve Fleming claims to have scored a goal as well.

WFS East League 2022 Month 4 – Preview

This weekend sees the over 50’s once more take the trip up to Dundee for June’s fixtures in Walking Football Scotland East League. This weekend we will be facing Dunfermline Dynamos, Dundee Utd CT and Fairfield looking for points to push us up into the top section of the league.

Dunfermline Dynamos
Despite currently sitting tenth in the league with one win and four draws from ten matches there’s always local derby pride to play for when Raith play the Pars at any level. The team will be hoping to get a win from this first game to set them up for a good day.

Dundee Utd CT
Sitting one place below us in the league with a slightly worse goal difference this will be an important. Our matches against Dundee Utd CT are always tight affairs and the team will have to be careful not to drop points against an experienced team.

Fairfield
Our final game sees us play fifth placed Fairfield who have five wins and three draws from their nine games. Fairfield are a team we’ve not played yet in their current guise but we have played against many times when they were under the St James banner.

Three tough games this weekend as always but plenty of scope to win some points and move up the table.

WFS East League 2022 Month 3

The squad set off on an overcast but dry Sunday morning on what looked to be a pivotal moment in our league campaign. Currently sitting in sixth place in the league we’re facing the teams directly above us so every point today is important.

Back row: Kevin Henderson, Dave Fawcett, Steve Fleming, John Cunningham, Jimmy Robertson, John Wylie
Front row: Martin Page, Johnston Scott, Charles Doherty, Haig Hutchinson

Our first game today is against Tayport. A tough game with opportunities for both sides and play going back and forth. Chances missed and shots saved in all areas the game has draw written all over it as we approach the final minute. The final minute passes and, to the surprise of all on the sidelines, the game continues. And then Tayport score. There’s not much time left to equalise, in fact we’re well into 17 minutes played when Tayport score again. Teams are now queuing up for the second game on the sidelines. “How long to go?” “We’re on 18 minutes at the moment.” “Are we playing twenty minute games this month?” “Who knows?” As this conversation is going on Tayport score a third. The final whistle blows and it’s a 3-0 loss for Raith. A conversation with our ref after the game and he insists that “all games are always 20 minutes. We’ve played that way all year.” At this point one of the other refs points out it should be 15 minutes and all the other games today will be 15 minutes long.
Saints in the Community 0-5 St James
Crieff Juniors 2-0 Fairfield
Dunfermline Dynamos 1-1 Montrose
Raith Rovers 0-3 Tayport

We sit out the next round of matches which are now back to 15 minutes.
Carnoustie Panmure 4-0 Fife Wanderers
Arbroath 2-1 Montrose
St Andrews & East Neuk 0-2 St James
Dundee Utd CT 1-2 Fairfield

Our second game of the day against Arbroath was a physical battle with some more controversy. In the fourth minute a tussle between an Arbroath forward and Jimmy Robertson ends up with both players in the box and unbelievably the ref awards a penalty to Arbroath which they convert to go one nil up. It’s hard to follow the reasoning behind this as both players entered the box at the same time with pushing and shoving by both. There was no intention by either to enter the box so a penalty or free kick both seems inappropriate. The game continues to be physical with both teams managing to carve out opportunities but with no more goals forthcoming. The game ends after 15 minutes.
Dunfermline Dynamos 1-3 Fairfield
Saints in the Community 0-2 Tayport
Arbroath 1-0 Raith Rovers
Carnoustie Panmure 0-1 Dundee Utd CT

After two losses we need to get something from our last game of the day against Crieff Juniors. The game starts well with John Wylie shooting low to the keeper’s right in the opening minutes. The boys are playing well and knocking the ball about with ease and things look to be going well until a quick two goals in the sixth and seventh minutes for Crieff put Rovers behind. However a quick reply from Stevie Fleming in the eighth minute equals things up again. Rovers continue to press and rain shots in the direction of the Crieff goal but without any luck and the game finishes with a point to each team after 15 minutes and no controversy.
St Andrews & East Neuk 1-2 Tayport
Dundee Utd CT 0-1 Fife Wanderers
Arbroath 3-1 Saints in the Community
Crieff Juniors 2-2 Raith Rovers

We sit the final round of games out.
Crieff Juniors 2-1Montrose
St James 4-0 Tayport
Dunfermline Dynamos 1-1 Fife Wanderers
Carnoustie Panmure 1-1 St Andrews & East Neuk

So only one point today from nine but we only drop one place in the league which is something. However the big thing from today’s matches revolves around the first round of matches today. What would have been the results had the games only lasted the proper 15 minutes? Our match was 0-0 so we would have one more point and Tayport two less. Would St James goal difference be as big as it is? Would the Crieff V Fairfield result have been different? With only two points between them this could be important to league positions. Similarly with Dunfermline and Montrose would the result at 15 minutes have made any difference to league positions later on in the season. With all of these possible variations to league positions surely this round of games should be voided and replayed? There is space in the calendar with only two games scheduled for the last round next month and again in November.

Current league table

WFS East League 2022 Month 3 – Preview

This weekend the Over 50s head to Dundee for round 3 of WFS East League 2022. Currently sitting in sixth place in the league after a disappointing month two an improvement in results is needed to maintain our push for the league title. Our matches this weekend will be against teams in the upper half of the league: Tayport, Arbroath and Crieff Juniors.

Tayport
Currently sitting fourth in the league with four wins and two losses. Last year we beat them three nil but it was a tough game so we will expect the same tight game again.

Arbroath
Currently sitting second in the league with four wins and a draw. Always a hard, physical team to play against they will be looking to consolidate their position in the league this month.

Crieff Juniors
Currently sitting third in the league solely on goal difference from Arbroath they’ll be looking for a god first season in the league. Top scorers in the league with 18 goals they also have conceded the most goals of the teams in the top eight.

It’ll be a tough day but after facing these three teams we’ll see where we really belong in the league this season.

Glasgow Over 50s WF Trophy

We left Starks Park early this morning for the trip through to Glasgow full of expectations. We find out on arrival that the format has changed due to more teams pulling out. Instead of five fifteen games we’re playing four eighteen minutes games and are straight in with a game against Giffnock SC Auld Timers.

A tight game with many chances and only Pagey’s heroics in goal and our new found ability to not put away our chances had the game finely poised at nil nil going into the fifteenth minute when the ref pings us for a third running offence and it’s a penalty to Giffnock which they convert. Sustained pressure from Raith fails to secure an equaliser and we lose our first game one nil.

Game two in our section ends in a three one win for Prestwick over Rossvale Madrid and Game three also a three one win for Giffnock over Bellahouston Thistle.

We go on to our third game against Prestwick determined to take something and keep our chances of progressing alive. Another tight game against a well organised Prestwick side whose striker gets away with murder constantly running off the ball and even running with the ball. Somehow the ref manages to catch three of his many runs inside the first seven minutes and awards Raith a penalty. Scott Jackson steps up and fires the ball low to the keepers left but the keeper reaches it and parries it away. In thirteen minutes Willie Carroll steps up in midfield and rattles a thunderbolt past the keeper. However the ref decides that the two steps Willie took towards the ball was a run and awards a penalty to Prestwick which they convert. Again Raith pressure fails to find the net and Prestwick manage by fair means and foul to run down the clock gaining a yellow for time wasting in the process.

The next two matches before lunch see Rossvale Madrid beat Bellahouston two one and Giffnock beat Prestwick three one.

Lunch taken care of and we face Bellahouston Thistle. A game we have to win, and hope other results go our way, to have any chance of progressing. Despite many opportunities we’re finding it hard to score with most of out shots rushed and off target. In the tenth minute a nice move with the ball pinging between Chillo, Scott Jackson and John Wylie in front of the Bellahouston box leads to John placing the ball in the net. In the twelfth minute a slick passing move down the left again falls to John Wylie and he finishes nicely to give us a two nil lead and ultimately a win.

The next game sees Giffnock beat Rossvale one nil. Game nine is an important one for us with a win for Bellahouston a must if we have to get to the quarter finals. It’s a back and forth game with Prestwick taking a two goal lead only for it to be reduced to one before being increased again. It’s looking dire for us but two late goals for Bellahouston give us hope. But it’s too late and Prestwick go through.

Our final game against Rossvale is just for pride. In the sixth minute a defence splitting one two leaves a Rossvale player alone in front of goal and he slides it behind Pagey for one nil. A similar move in the twelfth lets Rossvale in for two nil. A minute later John Wylie pulls one back for us and it’s two one. In a frantic final few minutes running penalties are converted by both teams (John Wylie) and the game finishes three two to Rossvale.

So one win from three at the end of the day. A bad day at the office or just unlucky in tight games? A bit of both to be honest. We need to learn to put away our chances. We need to be more direct, cutting out the cute little back heels and fancy Dan stuff. When we have the ball, slick, sharp passes and when we don’t we have a man and we cut down the other teams options.
On the other hand refereeing inconsistencies, which will always be there, hurt us bad today. Awarding a running foul against us when our player was cynically scythed down. And later, in the same game, disallowing a good goal and instead giving a penalty against us. If either of these had been correctly ruled the result would have been different. However we take the rough with the smooth and move on to the next set of games.

Glasgow Over 50s WF Trophy 2022 preview

The over 50s travel to Glasgow for the second competitive weekend in a row. This time to participate in the Over 50s trophy, the final event in the Glasgow Life Walking Football Glasgow Trophy. The team start the group stages with Alloa Athletic, Bellahouston Thistle, Giffnock SC Auld Timers, Prestwick and Rossvale Madrid. The top two in the group will progress to the Quarter finals.

Alloa Athletic: Currently sitting seventh in the WFS Central league with one win and two draws out of six games.
Bellahouston Thistle: A late replacement for St James who have pulled out both of their teams this weekend.
Giffnock SC Auld Timers: Currently sitting seventh in the WFS West league with three wins and two draws out of six games. We have played Giffnock previously in the Champions League losing a tight game 2-0
Prestwick: Currently sitting fifth in the WFS West league with four wins from six games.
Rossvale Madrid: Another team from WFS West league sitting in sixth place between Prestwick and Giffnock with four wins from their six games.

WFS East League 2022 Month 2

This morning as the senior (?) team (the ones that get paid to play) headed to Airdrie for the cup final the over 50s squad headed to Dundee for round 2 of this year’s walking football league. A condensed squad this month due in part to the cup final and partly due to injuries.

Kevin Henderson, Martin Page, Scott Jackson, Charles Doherty, Haig Hutchinson, Willie Carroll, John Wylie.

We sat out the first round of games.
Montrose 0-1 St Andrews & East Neuk
Arbroath 2-0 Dunfermline Dynamos
Fife Wanderers 0-5 St James
Dundee Utd 3-0 Saints in the Community

Our first game this month was against St Andrews and East Neuk. Missing the first round of games the team came into this one cold. And if you’ve ever been in the RPC Dundee you’ll understand why. A nervy first six minutes with Raith creating, and missing, many chances we finally got the breakthrough goal in the seventh minute. A move started by Martin Page in the Raith goal with every outfield player passing the ball ends with a through ball from Kevin Henderson to Scott Jackson and Scott slotting past the keeper for our first goal of the day. Two minutes later Willie Carroll steps out of defence and fires a vicious shot goal wards that rocks the crossbar. Raith continue to pin St Andrews back but it’s not until the fifteenth minute that an interception from the St Andrews defence allows Scott Jackson the chance and he bags his second of the day.

Crieff Juniors 2-3 Dundee Utd
Raith Rovers 2-0 St Andrews & East Neuk
Carnoustie Panmure 1-1 Dunfermline Dynamos
Montrose 1-4 St James

Another quick break for the team
Arbroath 1-1 Fairfield
Fife Wanderers 0-2 Tayport
Saints in the Community 0-1 St Andrews & East Neuk
Crieff Juniors 3-0 Dunfermline Dynamos

Next up we played St James. In the third minute a slick passing move between Haig Hutchinson, John Wylie and Kevin Henderson finishes with Kevin scoring his first of the campaign and Raith go one nil up. The next six minutes see Raith press St James hard stifling any chance of fluid play from last year’s champions. Then in the tenth minute a momentary lapse allows St James to get a man free on their left and he shoots past Pagey to bring the teams level. The game settles again into a tight battle with very few chances to either side until a carbon copy move has a St James player one on one with the keeper until Willie Carroll brings him down and the ref awards a penalty. The penalty is converted and despite pressing hard for the remaining minutes the match ends 2-1 to St James.

Raith Rovers 1-2 St James
Carnoustie Panmure 0-0 Fairfield
Montrose 0-1 Tayport
Arbroath 4-1 Fife Wanderers

Our final game of the day was against Carnoustie Panmure and we really needed to get something from this game to stay in the hunt. In three minutes John Wylie plays a one two with Scott Jackson and slots the ball past the Carnoustie keeper for a great start to the game. However that lead lasts less than a minute as Carnoustie equalise almost straight from the kick off. The game ebbs and flows backwards and forwards with both teams squandering chances but Raith looking decidedly more tired. And then disater in the thirteenth minute as Carnoustie score and go 2-1 up. Raith attempt to press for the final minutes but were unable to convert the pressure to a goal.

Dundee Utd 1-1 Dunfermline Dynamos
Carnoustie Panmure 2-1 Raith Rovers
Creiff Juniors 5-3 Saints in the Community
Fairfield 2-0 Tayport

And so we finish the first quarter of the league mid table and still in touch with the top of the table. The big lesson learned from today that this is a squad game and we need, if not the full ten man squad, at least a squad of eight to be competitive.

WFS East League 2022 Month 2 – Preview

This Sunday the over 50s return to Dundee for round two of WFS East League 2022. This round we face teams from St. Andrews & East Neuk, St James and Carnoustie Panmure.

St Andrews & East Neuk.
St Andrews & East Neuk haven’t had the best start to the league having lost all three of their games in the first round so will be looking to score some goals and grab some points this month. Last year we beat St Andrews 3-0 with goals from Harry Younger and John Wylie and the previous year we won one and drew one against them.

St James.
League winners the previous two seasons and currently sitting joint top of the league they will once again be a tough nut to crack. They’ve not been as high scoring this season as they usually are and their defence has leaked a few goals so maybe this year they’re vulnerable?

Carnoustie Panmure.
Currently sitting mid table with a win, a loss and a draw in round one. Carnoustie Panmure almost wrecked our second place last year with a 3-3 draw on the last day of the league so will no doubt prove to be stubborn opposition.
